PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 7, 1997--Sun Microsystems Inc. today announced that its mainframe-class Sun (TM) Enterprise (TM) 10000 server (popularly known as Starfire (TM) ) was selected by UNIX (R) Review magazine as outstanding server of the year. In making its selection, UNIX Review credited Sun with designing an innovative system that delivers excellent RAS (reliability, availability, and scalability) capabilities and is boosting Sun's competitiveness in the data center.
"While the Starfire does not live in a vacuum devoid of competition, it should go a long way toward dispelling the workstation-only perception of Sun," said Ralph Barker, senior technical editor, UNIX Review, after presenting the award. "The server provides outstanding scalability, manageability and high-availability features while maintaining compatibility with the existing SPARC (TM) Solaris (TM) software base."
Starfire -- A Mainframe Alternative
Since March, the revolutionary Starfire UNIX server, which is designed to run alongside legacy systems, has gained momentum over IBM and Hewlett Packard for customers who wish to consolidate systems; build new data warehouses, intranets or decision-support systems; run Enterprise Resource Planning applications (SAP, Bann, Oracle apps. and PeopleSoft); or who simply need to upgrade to a more powerful, scalable system that will grow with the business needs of a company.
The Starfire server comes equipped with up to 64 processors and provides customers with exceptional value and reliability for mission-critical applications. The system offers RAS features unique to UNIX servers, including Dynamic System Domains, Dynamic Reconfiguration, System Service Processor (SSP), Alternate Pathing and no single point of failure functionality.
"With Starfire, our goal was to design a system that delivers all the power and stability of the mainframe model, while maintaining the flexibility and cost-effective management model of SMP (symmetric multiprocessing) networked computing," said Shahin Khan, director of marketing for data center and high-performance computing group. "This award, and our continued growth in the UNIX server market, are clear signs that we achieved this goal."
