Vic: Police aim for 2,500 new recruits in new campaign

Victoria Police aims to attract 2,500 new recruits in the next three years in a $3
million advertising campaign to be aired on television and radio and in cinemas from tonight.

The joint Victoria Police and state government initiative is one of the biggest recruiting
drives undertaken by the state's police force and aims to reverse the tide of officers
leaving.

Premier STEVE BRACKS says the campaign is part of the government's promise of an extra
800 police to make the state's streets and towns safer.

Mr BRACKS says the Victorian police force has been stripped of resources and spirit
after seven years of massive cuts by the previous government.

The advertisement is also aimed at recruiting more women and people from multi-cultural
backgrounds to better reflect the diversity of the Victorian community.

Chief Commissioner NEIL COMRIE says the real-life advertisement shows the wide range
of police work and reveals the many human emotions faced by police members day in, day
out.
